Death on the Sappire by R.J. Koreto. Lady Frances Ffolkes, a young lady who is intelligent, a very out going personality, and you can say a independent young lady. I would compare her to a Marry Poppins, but a younger version. Of course without the nanny like traits. Major Colcombe who is a war veteran and a close family friend dies from a mysterious circumstances. Major Colcombe was in the process of completing a manuscript about his war experience in South Africa. Detailing the lost of life from fighting the war, but now with his death, the manuscript are missing.
Lady Frances Ffolkes take task in tracking down the missing manuscript and to find who responsible for Major Colocombe death, along with her loyal lady’s maid, June Mallow. Not only facing society sexist views against women, she find herself in the mist of challenges trying to track down this missing manuscript.
My 2nd book of the New Year is Devil’s Cold Dish by Eleanor Kuhns. This is the second book that I’ve read by Eleanor. The other book is Death in Salem which you should read before reading this one. I will tell you her book has me glued to continue reading. In Devil’s Cold Dish Will Rees and his wife have return home from Salem. Rees sister has been visiting, trying to convince him and his wife to alone her husband, her children and herself to say with them. Rees and Lydia refuse to allow them to say, but willing to help her so her children don’t starve. Rees learns that there a murder in town and is asked to assist, but later ask to withdraw from the case because of a conflict he had with the murder victim. Rumors being to surface the Rees’s wife Lydia is a witch and is physically attack. She is also accused of a 2nd murder that happen in town. Rees angry and eagered to solve this case and stop these rumors about his wife. Unable to leave his house and his family because fear for their safety. Can he solve this case with the majority of the Dugard town against him?
Death in Salem, by Eleanor Kuhns. When I first saw this book at the Library I thought this might be something about the salem witch trails. Well no, but it was a great book to read.
Will Rees traveling and visiting Salem looking to buy something special for his wife who is back at home looking after their children and is expecting a new addition to the family. Awhile in Salem, Rees comes upon a funeral procession for Mrs. Anstiss Boothe. At the same time he run into a old friend, Twig who fought with him in the war. Rees learns about Anstiss illness that lead to her death and meets Mr.Boothe. On his return home, Rees is chase down by his friend Twig to tell him that Mr. Boothe was Murder and the women he love is a suspect. Twig ask his old friend to help solve Mr.Boothe murder. Rees decide to help his friend and takes charge to solve the msytery death of Mr.Boothe. As he investigate and question people about Mr. Boothe he learns there a lot of history between the Boothe family and the family of Mrs. Anstiss.
