A little bit of a challenge coloring this one. One of the challenges is being able to work with the colors you have. Next would be the different shades of brown and then the blending of the colors. Still trying to figure out how to color hair to make it look like hair.
It was six years ago I decided to start teaching myself how drawing. I went to Michael’s and brought my first sketchbook along with some other supplies just to experiment for fun. The last time I was serious about art was in high school. Remembering what I learned from high school I used that information as my starting point. Drawing a oval like egg shape and dividing the shape on where the eyes would go, the nose and the month. My drawing weren’t that great, but I could only get better with practice.
Now at the beginning of August 2020, I started my 3rd sketchbook where I just draw portraits. Looking over my drawing I can see that my drawing are closely resembling the actual person in the photo reference I use. Practice, even though this is just my 3rd sketchbook where I focus on drawing portrait, I’ve also practiced drawing them in my journals including add watercolor. I still have much to improve and learn. Learning on your own has it challenges, but it also make it fun.
After 2 year and about 2 months, I filled my sketchbook. This is my 2nd one that I’ve filled If you visited my blog before you have seen a few post of portrait sketches I’ve done using photo reference. The sketchbook I used is a canson sketchbook with 100 pages, 9×12 inches. I wish I could show you all my sketches so you can see the progress I’ve made with each sketch. Just show the importance of practicing to get better. Here are a few sketches that I’ve posted on this blog before along with some news one. For the last five to eight pages I decided to see if I could sketch a portrait just using ink.
I hope with all the madness with this coronavirus everyone is doing well and keeping busy as society has come to a stand still.
We all get excited when starting a new sketchbook, but do you also get excited when you are about to finish one? Well am excited that am almost done with my. Just under 20 pages left. I started this sketchbook 2 years ago, around the end of March. This sketchbook I used for drawing portraits. All of them are using photo references I find on the net. I hope one day I can start drawing people from real life.
When drawing faces I’ve notice that there are certain faces that have their challenges. The challenge is the shape of the face. Some people have like a roundish face shape that sometimes it difficult to get that roundness accurate. Others have that curve roundness around the cheek around. When am drawing that roundness area it look like they have their month stuff with food. Other times it the jaw area plus the cheek area that a challenge.
Depending on what am drawing, I’ll use one of the four sketchbooks that I use. I have one sketchbook for just drawing portraits in pencil. Another one that am just practicing sketching or the sketching that just terrible to show. On my last post you saw my strathmore toned gray sketchbook and then I also have a sketchbook that is just for journaling and where I use watercolor.
I haven’t posted to much from my sketchbook where I just draw portraits. It a canson stretchbook and I’ve been drawing it since March 2018. I don’t think am even half way through with it, but it always amazing to see your skills improve as you look through each page.
Well I haven’t blog about my progress in drawing lately. It been 4 years since I started drawing again. It funny looking at my first sketchbook and seeing all the portrait drawings I did and compare it to the ones I’ve done lately. You can actually see the progress and the more likeness to the actually person. Am still trying to improve in my shading and trying to draw different portrait angels. There are still area I haven’t experimented in such as drawing white hair or facial hair. Drawing people of darker skin color and faces of older people that have much more facial details.
All of my drawings are were done awhile sitting on the floor. I don’t have desk in my room and don’t like being in area where people are passing by. Plus I do a lot of my drawing at night when everyone else in the house is asleep.
When I first started drawing 4 years ago.
Drawings I did just a month or so ago.
Just got to say, I did cheat on this drawing. I drew it first in pencil then went over it using those artist pens. It would have been awesome if I did draw in pen first, but still a long way from being able to do that. Still thinking if I should color it in with water-colors, but am still experimenting with the water-colors that I brought.
Just experimenting with the color pencil I have here at home. As you can see, not great at all. Still working on how to draw hair and you can see not even close to okay. O well, just got to keep practicing and experimenting.
A drawing portrait colored with you basic color pencils brought from Michaels. I’ve read and seen on the internet that the prismacolor pencil are the best, but when you are on a budget, you got to work with what you got.
